I think suspicion of GMail e-mail accounts is part of the security concerns as anybody can set one up under any name they choose.
As for printing and then scanning for nefarious purposes you don't even need to do that as you can 'print' straight to a PDF. As usual, the security inconveniences the decent folk and the crooks just find ways 'round it.
