"Darrn Sarrrff", we had HL Smiths (loved that place), GW Smiths, Henry's, Proops, Technomatic, Lasky's, Bull Electrical, etc...
Only Bull Electrical seem to still be around, but I heard a rumour recently that Dave Fisher, the owner, had passed away... Proops is still sort-of around as a web-only supplier of bits.
As a schoolboy, used to buy valves and Ledex switches (remember those?) etc. from HL Smiths - the uncle of one of my friends worked there, so we always got a discount. You could buy anything in Proops - they had a huge eclectic collection of junk - bits of landing gear from aircraft, Geiger counters etc. Loved it. Bought my first transistor from Henry's - an OC71...
The BVWS auction at Wootten Bassett and Audiojumble are the closest I've seen in recent years...
