Thanks Mark; I'm pleased you enjoy my posts; I simply try to join in on the forum rather than be what David describes as a "lurker". If we all sat back and watched then there would be nothing going on. I regret that I don't have enough time to read every post or thread so have to resort to cherry picking my favourite subjects; I truly feel guilty when members spend a lot of time whilst reading my posts and trying to help me but I'm unable to respond in kind; of course like everyone certain subjects hold little interest for me so I skip them but others will find these fascinating.
Before jumping in asking questions I do spend time trying to resolve problems that I encounter after all it is these problems which drive me on but as in this instance it would take a great deal of time and research which given the end result would have been a total waste of time other than me gaining unwanted knowledge; my computer would still not move the 3D graphics around and believe me I've tried.
This morning Bron and I visited our friends Mike and Joyce Phelan. Mike is very clued up on computers so I bent his ear and we were soon settled in his cozy workshop/office viewing his monitor. Mike showed me how he uses "Paint" for a lot of his work and how to drop pictures etc. into paint then save as Jpeg (I think). This was brilliant and Mike also explained the "Print/Screen" button on the keyboard that I have not used once in 14 years as I hadn't a clue what it was for. Back home the 3D pictures remains steadfast and stubborn but I am learning all the time.
Yes I could spend a great deal of time playing with a computer but as in owning a car I want to drive the car not play with it as I want to use the computer and not play around with it.
Your explanation Mark regarding resolution and graphics was just what I needed and I can follow your information so many thanks for taking the time to supply it. I'm sure the computer experts will consider such information as very basic but if I don't know I'd rather look stupid and ask otherwise I'll never know.
One good thing about threads such as this is that hopefully these questions only need asking once as they can then be accessed by searching? I can find a lot of answers by surfing the web and "You Tube" has turned into a brilliant teaching medium; not only does it explain verbally but the videos show exactly how things are done. When I start out on something totally new to me I'm thick as a plank but this doesn't last because I'm keen to learn; at the beginning of last week I could not produce a working drawing using a CAD program; last Saturday I finally cracked it not only in 2D but in 3D as well. This computer problem though stopped me dead and I would have preferred to use the time practicing using CAD or continuing with my lathe upgrade; as it turned out rather than moan I started this thread which has not only generated a lot of interactive communication but added a lot of useful information; I also like to encourage others to have a go at new projects; something they have always considered beyond them; the hardest part is making a start.
I already have a recipient in mind to pass this old computer onto; he lives in Sheffield and is about seven feet tall; huge grin and covered in camouflage kit; interested Joe?
I like this forum a great deal because it is easy going and all members rub along well together. I joined Practical Machinist forum a while ago because it suited my mechanical engineering background but recently I'm spending less time on it due to the increased amount of swearing; I'm not a prude by any means as I swear in my own company when I belt my thumb with an hammer but I don't swear in company and certainly would never resort to swearing on a forum. I feel at home on this forum even if I do ramble on.
Now guys what's the best new computer I can buy for around £500; Gary has picked a beauty so any advance on this; if not I'll most likely go with Gary's suggestion. I'm not in a hurry and in the meantime I'll still kick this computer around and study more in depth the information already posted as there is a lot to understand.
