Why pay for a new case, PSU and disk drives when the old ones are OK? That said, I don't know if a modern m/b would physically fit in the old case.
The PSU will almost certainly be an old ATX/ATX12V V1.x 20-pin connector (the 12V included the extra 4-pin Molex connector) - not the now-required ATX V2.x 24 pin connector. Also the power rating of the existing PSU may well be too low. No SATA power connector on old PSUs etc. etc. etc.
Col's disks are IDE, not SATAIII, so slow. No IDE SSDs are available (silly thing to do anyway), so no point in a new SSD unless the MB is changes to SATAIII-capable.
A new decent MB would be about GBP 70, plus CPU (50+) + memory (40) + PSU (...you get the point).
Just clean the system up both physically and s/w-wise, add the extra memory (throw away the old DIMM) and borrow an AGP card to see if its worth buying your own. If you can blag an AGP card, then you are only actually forking out some time & 20 quid for the extra RAM. BARGAIN!!
If that doesn't work, re-sell the DIMM on eBay and buy a pre-built system from a reputable source.... essentially a zero sum game but with a slight upside in that you still have your old, but now cleaned-up, system to act as a media server or whatever...
