You could certainly build you own PC, Col, as you have the tenacity and willingness to learn.
By the time support for XP ends next year it will be twelve years old so that wasn't exactly here today and gone tomorrow.
I think Windows 7 came pretty quick on the heals of Vista because that wasn't up to much and 8 is more about making a PC act like a mobile 'phone. I haven't used either but going on the reports I'd agree with Gary.
