WOW; what a lot of information to follow up on; many thanks guys.
Thanks Al; I tend to do a complete HDD wipe about every six months installing a fresh XP Home Edition which gives me a nice computer to mess up again. I always use the motherboard CD to install the drivers and shut down and re-boot at each stage. When I get to the SP2 on the CD it simply refers me to Microsoft saying I need to download SP2 which I do.
I've just checked and I also upgraded to SP3 and I was going to delete this to see if it had any effect but I'm unable to delete. When I install XP I always have to wait about an hour whilst something like 95 updates are installed then updates are on automatic and I seem to be installing these on a daily basis every time a new update is flagged.
I've installed the graphics drivers at least twice Paul without any effect but good suggestion and I'm following all advice given.
It's going to take me a while to run through your comprehensive list of what I need to do Nick; many thanks for taking the trouble. I have a lot to earn which you will take for granted but I make up for by being stubborn. Things like latest BIOS are alien to me so I'm in a steep learning curve once again. In my favour I do want to resolve this problem rather than just hand the computer over to a repair shop where I'll learn nothing. I have projects stacked up but they are on hold until I sort this out with your help guys.
I've just spent 30 minutes typing an email and was about to send when there was a thud and the computer shut down; not a power cut it just died. It would not switch on immediately but after a minute or so it booted up normally. I was planning on buying a new computer around Christmas when the sales are on and fancied a DELL but in the meantime this steam powered one will have to suffice.
A bit more information; the message I receive whilst trying to "Save" or "print" using emachineshop is a box stating " Fix Video Problems": Your video adapter is not configured properly for the emachineshop software giving three options which briefly are 1/ Activate software (unaccelerated) rendering mode. 2/ Set hardware acceleration to "None". 3/ Update your video software. I played around for hours but without success.
My graphics driver is; SiS741/SiS741GX Graphic Driver.
