Perhaps the strangest, was in the 60-70's. A method and machine to break the lignin bond in straw to allow a ruminant (cow) stomach to be able to digest it. This was done by heating the straw in a 31/2 % anhydrous ammonia atmosphere. This was sold and many machines were made under a few trade names.
