I've tried the trick with the battery:-
With two AAs it made a slight improvement in that the output voltage could be set a bit lower before the LED lit. I then tried a PP3 which stopped the LED from spontaneously lighting BUT it tended to latch on, ie stay lit when the load was removed.
I've also noticed, and this is without a battery at all, that the scale I originally marked on the case is no longer accurate as it reads low. In fact the minimum voltage available is 1.6V instead of 1.25V.
