Protection diodes are definitely on the 'To do' list. When I'm charging batteries with it there's a diode built into the connection plug which gives protection in the even of power failure.
The 390Ω resistor is so I could get the desired output range with a preferred valve pot. This example from the National Semiconductor data-sheet uses a 1.2kΩ one so I should be all right.
