I have been having problems sourcing stuff for this, but after an hour grubbing about in a scrap metal yard this morning, I've come up with some box section steel that fits snugly, I just have to get the seam out of the inside. Also I could only find two short pieces for the bottom part, so will have to do some creative thinking. I have a bench grinder with a 1/3hp motor, which will have to do at the moment, so I'll probably build the grinder offset somehow. I'll keep you posted.
Many thanks olliesnook for your kind words. I'm pleased you like the design which is easy to copy. Similar machines to mine can be bought brand new in the states but at a price. In the states many of these machines are indeed used for knife grinding/honing.
If you can obtain a suitable motor at little cost or for nothing the machine is quite cheap to build. The major cost with my machine was the abrasive belts and the honing belt but these are consumables anyway.
Good luck if you decide to go ahead and please keep us posted on progress.
Kind regards, Col.
Ollie
