Thanks, Mark. I knew other bits would be necessary but they are the sort of things I just fiddle with 'til it works. I can't find on the datasheet how much output current a 741 can provide which is why I put the transistor in.
I think the read switch worked at about half an amp but not much below that.
The main reason I'm wanting to add this is for charging batteries - if it lights up then everything is connected properly. The lowest current range is 25 mA.
