They're B8As not B9As. They're fine when used by a proper Designer/Manufacturer, apart from EL41.
I often think it's a pity they lost out to B9As, but that's history.

Ooops, you can't get away with a slip of the pen on this forum. I've furtled around with enough DAC90As to know that there are only 8 pins per valve!

The cost of my teeth will ensure that there is a little less in the pot for my care home fees, should I live long enough to go gaga. As it is, it's clear that I sometimes forget the difference between eight and nine pins on a valve, so I guess I'm already going downhill, but I hope to live long enough to become a problem to my kids! Oh well, time cures everything in the end.

As to asbestos, I'm on borrowed time - I worked with asbestos cement flue pipe and sheet almost daily for ten years, and always carried a reel of asbestos rope in my overalls for jointing flue pipes. Asbestos fibres abound in the atmosphere from such things as car and lorry brake pads, and whilst not wishing to trivialise the hazards, really, it's 'blue' asbestos - crocidolite, used in the past to lag heating pipes in commercial buiildings and ships that is the most dangerous. I wouldn't personally get too excited about that used in a radio, or asbestos cement sheets used in sheds and for roofing, or a 6" square in an ironing board. But in a DAC90, it's going to be loose and flaky, so best taken outdoors, sealed in a plastic bag and binned. (Preferably with the radio still attached to it!).
