I've replaced the rest of the iffy resistors which has brought about further improvement.
LW is still useless, though I can just hear Radio 4 in the right place so that's still to investigate.
The Gram input seems odd. Putting a cap across it improved the tone but it's really more that it suffers from a lack of bass than an excess of treble.
The other odd thing is how the volume control behaves. For the first quarter of its travel works as expected, and that's about the normal listening level anyway. The next half makes no difference and it blasts the house down in its final quarter. Classic symptoms of a duff pot but it's fine on MW so there's more fun to be had looking into that.
I'll be out tomorrow and it may be as well to leave it for a while as I've just made a chocolate sponge pudding and forgot to put the flipping cocoa in so my mind is obviously suffering low emission.
