Hi Gary, sometimes I am not to good at putting brain into text:
In series with HT:
I agree with what you say about using the 450r field coil as a series arm of an LC filter as I think that was probably how it was configured in the set that the replacement speaker came from.
In shunt with HT:
It would need a current limiting resistor in series with the 450r field coil, the -ve bias voltage will be proportional to the value of any series resistor chosen.
"The alteration would be to simply put the -ve end of the reservoir cap (100mF C24) directly to the 25Z5 cathode."
I'm having trouble interpreting the above?
