I think I've found the reason. The PU sockets have got a damned great 560kΩ in the way. The radio itself is much louder.
The alignment seemed OK but there's a lot of crackling when tuning so I think the gang would benefit from a good clean.
By the way, I think there's an alignment technique involving an AVO so you can SEE when it's at maximum output. Where to you connect it and on what range?
