I agree Joe, if the set both inside and outside is say 90% original it's a shame if it gets messed up, as the outside is the most visual I find it's the final job on that that either makes it good or not so good, it is the old dilema, the choice is with the owner/repairer, my old R1155 is 99% original and virtually untouched, fortunately the front panel lettering is engraved on seperate unscrewable escutcheon plates so I could get that bit looking very much like, however the originall wrinkle finnish on the panel is of the very fine variety, the general consensus when doing a wrinkle finnish is that the job has to be heated to get the right reaction but the R1155's front panel is spot welded to the rest of the receiver, so thats a dilema for me I suppose, even if I got the wrinkle correct the colours on the tuning scale are a bit faded (but perfectly usable) so would a new looking front panel look ok with that...as you say a dilema, no doubt I will reach a conclusion at some point, a better scale would probably decide it.
I realise this can become a hot topic, restoration/consevation etc but sometimes it can be a difficult one to decide. I guess if we get some enjoyment from our endeavors then that's all that matters.........
