one of us( and i admit it might be me) is cofused i throught that the cap in points ignition system was connected across the points to stop them arcing .again i can't see that the back emf from the coil can cause the problem you discribe.
or am i missing some thing? on the contactors we use at work (admittedly ac ) the only thing that creates premature ware on the contactors are the spring that forces the top contacts apart when power to the coil is removed.do you have any photos of the contactors in question? as i am sure the will be different to the ones used for 3 ph motors.

if its made by hand it can be repaired by hand
