I think it's about time I put a word in for Eddystone: don't want to see them 'left out in the cold' in this debate about vintage s/w and comms. receivers.
As most of you will be aware, the sets that Eddy. manufactured for the home user generally fall into two distinct camps: those for the dedicated Amateur Radio enthusiast and those for the general short-wave listener. The former cover the Amateur bands (generally pre-WARC) but the others are general coverage - although they do cover the Amateur frequencies. Within those two categories, at the date range of their manufacture - and this still applies today - you can find just about find any set to suit your requirements and depth of your pocket (within reason, of course and accepting the usual condition that the more exotic the radio, the more it will cost
).
On the user-ability ratings, Eddystone are famous for their tuning mechanisms and the quality of their builds is second to none. Maintenance can be a bit tricky with some sets, mainly on account of the high density of the component fit below the chassis., but with time, patience and a steady hand, they are maintainable. At this point I am tempted to start waffling on about various models, but I shall desist: anyone who wishes to discover summary details about various models is advised to visit The Gallery.
