I concluded that to wait for a dry spell could take forever, the way the weather has been this year I'll be six feet under by the time it is dry, so my first batch has gone in and is now submerged underwater, so I'll see what happens to it overnight!
I'll have to work on the basis that it should get stronger as it gets nearer the surface.
The trench is about 27 inches wide and 12 feet long, to add a row of flags to an already flagged area. It became obvious as I dug it that my 10" deep is more than was dug for the existing flags, and I think they are on just ballast rather than concrete other than a couple of inches beneath the flags.
My intention will be to build a 'podium' about 4" high above the flagged area to stand a shed on, so it won't be standing in water after rain.
