Joe, thanks for your reply. I have just had a go at bailing out the trench (I dug it about 10" deep, and it is about 3" full of water) and realised I am wasting my time, obviously the surrounding ground is sodden to this level, so my first batch of dry mix will sit in water, not just in a damp hole. I'm quite sure that if we have another run of bad weather the trench will simply fill to the brim with water, and the frogs will move in!
I'll fill it in a number of batches, as I'm carrying bags of stone chippings from the local B&Q in an ordinary motor-car which I don't want to overload! Not the cheapest way, I know.
