Thanks for getting back to us - I'm pleased that I might have convinced you in the end! And yes, capacitive coupling of some kind would be my guess too. The impedances in these circuits are much higher than transistor circuits, so only a tiny amount of capacitive leakage will cause noticeable hum. Good luck with it, and let us know how it turns out.
I'm also glad that this thread made me revisit and think through the issues again, and I hope it will be a useful reference for the future. This hobby isn't always easy
