Cutting the mains earth lead at the plug is going to do nothing, as Mark H has said the mains earth if originally fitted should be connected to all exposed metal work in the unit, if only a twin mains cable was fitted at the factory then you need to satisfy yourself that all is well and up to original spec from a shock hazzard elimination point of view, failing that a mains isolating transformer.
Personally I like to keep the circuits as they were originally designed (pending manufactures original modifications) replacing any substandard components and/or wiring and then run such units on an mains isolating transformer if it is an ac/dc unit, you know exactly where you are then as it is sometimes very easy to forget your own modifications....!
