I really don't like the sound of this!
If there is an earth lead, then it MUST be connected to all exposed metalwork on the machine. No exceptions!
Running an earth lead into the player, then leaving it unconnected as described will not protect the cable. That is what the fuse in the mains plug is for.
This machine would fail a PAT test as it stands, and rightly so.
In this case, if you were interested in making it safe, then you should install an isolating transformer. It need only be 30VA or so, although obviously you'd measure the consumption yourself to verify this. This would also help with the hum problem.
