I forgot to mention the burning wire:-
Col gave me the wire and I made and fitted the handles.
As for my old teachers I've a lot to be grateful for as I still use tools that they gave me and other things I made at school.
Actually, I never used a turning gouge at school. Most of what we did was with ¼" mortise chisels re-ground as scrapers and sometimes skews also used as scrapers.
I admit that the segmented turning worked far better than I'd expected as I've always struggled with mitre joints. I think I managed better following Col's advise to cut them with a hacksaw.
