be cause of its age i would recomend you check/change the following before aplying mains.
1.c99 the coupling cap to the sound output valve for the same reasons you would do it in a valve radio.
2..c67 the cap that couples the line osc to the line output valve dont want any thing to happen to the lopt.
3.c112 this couples the frame osc to the frame output valve .again to protect the frame output tx
when i did this for a liveing the only time i used a variac was on sets that used 3 leged fuse protectors.
on ac/dc valve sets it was out with the filter cap and plug in.then stand with my hand by the on/off switch.
