albeit some joker at Bush decided to hide the detector diode inside an IF can!

That's pretty common in my experience.

Try looking inside the coil that does the ISM function on a Hacker Sovereign II - there's several resistors, capacitors and a diode in there!

And, DAB is OK really - it's how the broadcasters use it that determines the sound quality, not the medium. For general listening, I'd rather have some of the subtle MPEG artefacts (if you can actually hear them) than the noise and multipath distortion of FM.
