Thanks to the good offices of Alan B I am now a member of the Honourable Company of Lathe Owners.
I've been nearly all day today setting it up and all seems to be well. I can't actually try it yet as I've still to procure a motor drive belt.
Who wants to open a book on how long it takes me to put something through the window?
