Re vacuum chucks and other aspects of woodturning, one of my favourite professional turners - highly regarded in woodturning circles and much in demand as a demonstrator and tutor is Bob Chapman, from Bingley. He made his own vacuum chuck and details can be found here, along with other interesting stuff he's written on his website and in magazines:

Another highly regarded professional turner - Simon Hope - designed and markets his own vacuum chuck and other high end tools and accessories. Simon also makes 'small pipes' - bagpipes that is, in a range of tartans to order, using African blackwood which has to be turned and drilled with a high degree of accuracy to ensure that they're tuned properly. He embellishes the pipes with pewter ferrules that he turns. I've visited his workshop near Colchester, and coincidentally, he's demonstrating at our local woodturning club tomorrow night for the third year running.
These guys take woodturning to a whole new level.
