If it's too wet to go to the tip I like off-cuts.
I do think that if you've got one mechanical skill it's easier to learn another. In recent years I've had to learn traditionally female skills like cooking and sewing. My attitude was, if I can mix cement I can mix a cake and if I can plaster a wall I can ice it. Sewing isn't far removed from riveting.
As for a child being told they'll never amount to anything and therefore not trying, that may be the case for some but for some of us it brings out our stubbornness and invokes an attitude of "I'll show the b*****s."
