Regarding that marking on the base. I saw it and thought it looked North East Asian. Then looked back in the thread and saw it was a Chinese chair. Anyway, the ideogram (京) means capital (as in city). This is pronounced "jing" in Chinese hence Beijing (north capital).

In Japanese, 京, is pronounced "kyo" as in Tokyo (east capital) and Kyoto (capital city and prefecture in its own right).

So now you know . I suppose the chair must have been either made or traded in Peking at some point.

Thanks Wage Slave, I'll check with the owner. Her late husband was Chinese so I'd say it's a safe bet that the chair's origins are in China rather than Japan. I've started dabbling with the Chinese language - not sure I'll ever get the hang of it though

I have to say the amount of knowledge on this forum never ceases to amaze me
