Well to me the universal socket isnt daft. Anywhere in Europe I have to use an Adaptor and its up to me to know that the voltage and frequency are OK for the device I'm plugging in. The Uni socket saves the Adaptor and ours, well a few years old now, are mechanically poor and wobble around so not having to use them would be a benefit.
The light bulb situation is a complete mess... we dont have any old bayonet but do have ES and SES and the best of the lot the GU10 (the base with the two locking pins. I'm actually trying to standardise on those but I expect soon they will be declared obsolete, for some reason, and I will have to start over.
