Hard to find out about that? I guess mostly it will be one end and from my experience, trying to find the breaks, at the inside (I tried re-making connections at the outside). Of course it could be broken along its length as well.
The Alan Douglas reference didnt give that case.
My guess is not a lot of difference as the wires are still coupled by capacitance. However, if the resistance of a winding is very high, compared to others, then if you have the facilty you could measure and compare Q's. You dont need a Q meter a reasonable comparison can be made with a sig gen, frequency counter and scope using the delta F method.
