Quite right Ian - indeed when doing TO1 AC128s et al, a big croc-clip on the case is what I use. It's really the final stage of my "treatment" - the bashing while volts are applied (after the initial blast) - that is easier with a screen lead. "Automatic whisker detection" - like that

Your bass control is probably OK - they are a bit like that. Funnily enough, when at min, the amp is flat - in other words it only provides boost. The treble control is the same. It sounds like it's cutting simply because the loudspeaker needs a bit of "help" - as all radio 'speakers normally do...
If you look on your 'scope with 100Hz as an input, you should see an appreciable change between centre and max - but because our hearing is logarithmic, it's surprisingly hard to hear the change. From that experiment though, you should be able to see that if you use as little bass as possible, your batteries will last longer
As for ease of service, I think you should try a Grundig or a Dynatron or anything Japanese next...
Now it's working well, any comments on the performance would be interesting. I've never put one next to a VHF Herald before - I don't one fully restored yet - more than one that are 90% restored, but you know how it goes...
