Thoughts on mains droppers?

(As an aside, note that the single pole mains switch is in the neutral line. I've seen an explanation somewhere as to why they often did that, but I can't recall it. Any ideas anyone?)

David, I believe the reason might be to keep the AC field away from the volume control, i.e. hum limiting.
