If you spray it with acrylic (water based), then fill in the 'PILOT' letters with Humbrol modelling enamel and wait till it's almost dry, you can wipe off any surplus enamel from the surface of the front with a cotton cloth dampened with enamel thinners (NOT cellulose), which ought not to trouble the acrylic paint Joe, and you'll be left with the lettering neatly picked out in black. (You're right of course about the expense Joe - you can soon spend a tenner on paint and a few bits and bobs - perhaps more than some commonplace sets are worth, so the cost/benefit case gets a bit shaky.
