Mark - when you say "S/W is dead", what were you using for an aerial? The two old Pyes that I'm working on here are very deaf on S/W - until I hook them up the 30 ft. outdoor wire - then there are many stations, albeit mainly towards the LF end (6 - 10 MHz). Needless to say, it's RCI that puts in the strongest signals! 
If it really is 'dead' on S/W, the first place I'd look at is the local osc. to see if it really is osc'ing.
