Well have to say something in praise of Epson... my 10 yera old Stylus Photo R300 produces superb output and the inks dont fade or change colour, even if left in the sun, which is important to me. It prints on acetate OK but I've never tried multiple pass.
Expensive to run? Doesnt seem so to me although I dont do a large quantity of printing.
Lots of anecdotes of this or that printer is expensive to run but it would be good to see some "cost / print" figures from different makers printers (6 cartridge models). These figures used to be available and being as you may be in the market for a new printer soon David perhaps you could do the research and publish some results for us here, thanks if you do.
I guess the printer / scanner /copier David has come down to such a low price to compete with the competition... many consumers just get their wallet out for the lowest price, with a name they have heard of. Its crazy pricing, how can such a device be made for £68 amd every one stay in business ... so its the inks we have to pay for ...or the corporates do in any quantity. Often major setups and refurbs come out of a different kitty to the inks, these have to get signed off at higher levels. Consumables is a different budget and no one worries too much in my experience.
Epson ink is more expenisve than gold ? What about other makers inks? They are probably the same, fierce competition generally makes pricings similar. Safron, truffles, perfumes and probably lots more things are more expensiv than gold but so what ... I cant make much sense of that comparison. I dont buy gold either... of course I wish I had a few years back.
