Clever stuff, of that there is no doubt. When I visited Gerry Wells with my son some years ago he demonstrated his glass blowing and valve making equipment to us.

I've loosely translated it into 'Yorkshire' - not as a literal translation which wouldn't make much sense, but I won't be running it across my Anglo-French granddaughter who gained an A* in GCSE French aged 12, as she might give it the red pen treatment! In the hope that others on the forum who speak better French than I do will forgive any howlers, FWIW, here's my best effort:

Model engineering being one of its favourite hobbies, he set himself the challenge of building an engine to power a model boat. In 1959 Claude passed the amateur radio licence exam and gained the calllsign F2FO on a 5 bands using an AM transceiver. Claude then set his sights on the higher frequencies and built a station for 2300 MHz and 10 GHz which was described in Radio-ref. These two achievements culminated in the first France-England QSOs on these bands in 1968 and 1969. A superb QSO "cross-country races-band" 2,3 - 10 GHz at a distance of 40 km still remains his proudest moment. Out of nostalgia and respect for the early experimenters Claude has designed “retro” 1920s style valve receivers and QRP transmitters tubes putting out 3 Watts CW on 80m, with QSO throughout Europe being achieved.
Claude is an admirer of the famed Collins equipment designed by Mr Arthur Collins, and has restored several Collins transmitter-receivers, and in particular the 618-T.
To mark the centenary of the invention of the triode valve by Lee De Forest in 1906, Claude set himself the challenge of manufacturing a replica of the mythical TM developed in 1915 by General Ferrie, French telecommunications pioneer. Mr Delzers de Ferrie (1868-1932) was head of French military communications, and was involved in the first ever transatlantic amateur radio communication in 1923.
To say the least, to design and make a valve is a daunting task! It involved Claude in building all the tooling and equipment necessary for this project, to make the electrodes and shape the glassware, and in particular the various pumps - including one molecular, to obtain the vacuum necessary for the valve to function.
Did he succeed?
Yes! Claude made ten valves, and to put them to the test a QSO took place on January 1, 2005 on CW 80m between Montrouge/92 and Camaret/29. The valves are robust and have been used to make other QSOs.. The initial goal - which was to cross the Atlantic to commemorate the achievements of pioneers such as De Forest and General Ferrie, was achieved by F6BWO who has had many QSOs on 4 continents using the valves.
What a daunting challenge to set oneself, and what an inventive and ingenious man Claude Paillard, F2FO is.
