Of course being stupid I did it, as you describe; the 'tedious' way. Relying on just an electric jigsaw/drill and cutting everything by hand. I was more than happy with the end results each time, but I can confirm your jig method is definitely the way to go. My neck and shoulders let me know for a week afterwards the error of my ways!
A first-class job, done the 'right' way, and a very easy to follow write-up. Well done David!
Far from stupid Robert - it's a question of using what tools and methods are to hand. The term I'd use for that is 'stupid' but 'resourceful'. It wouldn't be possible to make the People's set by using a router jig anyway - about the only thing you could do to make life a bit easier would be to make a drilling template to drill each patter of holes. But as you know, you kindly sent me the 1:1 artwork for that back to enable me to make one for my People's set, and I'll use the same technique on that as you did, placing the paper template over the blank and drilling hole after hole after hole, with as much accuracy as I can muster!
The A22 back is outstanding, and it came as no surprise that your superb BVWS Bulletin article on that restoration won the Geoffrey Dixon-Nuthall award recently, so congratulations on that. A router jig would have made life easier for cutting the slots on that A22 panel but there would still have been a lot of work using a pillar drill. The end result, including the labelling of the panel speaks for itself as the picture shows. Both backs are absolutely top notch, and I can't begin to imagine how many hours of tedious skilful work was involved.
