It is fortunate that you have the skill and cash to repair the lathe, many potential purchasers would not. I make a point of always insisting on cash on collection for items I collect in person, even if the description states Paypal only. In the case of the lathe I would either have cut my losses and left it there or pointed out the more obvious defects to re-negotiate a fair price (scrap metal value?).
