I've found variable speed mains drills often lack torque at the lower speeds needed to drill metal so I prefer one of the 18 volt or higher battery drills for such jobs. When doing sparky work for paying customers the battery drill meant I could still do drilling with the sockets circuit off and it saved having to use 120 volt kit.
