There were so many models of these that I am not surprised by that. Check that it's not O/C and also check and clean the wavechange switch, as they are the root of all evil. Especially in this case, as the aerial circuit goes through it too and it's not the best switch in the universe on these.
Another thing to note is that the 6BE6 / EK90 is not the most reliable valve on the planet. Not as bas as the UCC85, but you get the idea.
