A tiny update, almost embarrassing.
I bought a couple of 3.5v MES torch bulbs and put one in to replace the O/C pilot bulb. It works fine. The heater voltage is a bit low and anyway there's a 6R resistor in the way. So there's a Nice glow on the dial now
