We all have our own ideas and have to find what suits us best.
The standard advise is to brush the first four coats on, but you do need a decent brush - can't show you mine as I can't find it.
I had exactly the same problem with not loading the rubber enough.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube which are a good guide. They also show how different people do it differently.
