Well, boring old Xmas with "nowt on t'telly" so it was off to the workshop for a bit of cabinet restoration and relaxation from the rest of the family (you know who you are).
The set had been kept in a damp place going by the selective corrosion within the set. The chassis was in excellent condition but the bolts holding the speaker in were tarnished and I had to use a carbo cutter to cut new slots in screw heads in order to extract them or more usually get the heads right off to free the panels. Good days worth of effing there just getting the case stripped into separates. Found the gauge pointer bar seized with goo, why oh why do people keep adding lube when all it needs is a good clean and light oil to keep in operation? Add ten tons of congealed fluff and you had the pointer from hell, deep joy.
The cabinet was scratched to b****ry and needed a lot of work to get it up to the level in the photos. The chassis was reasonable, just some waxies to replace but the O/P speaker transformer was open circuit on the primary side and for testing I resorted to a temp lash up. During testing have found no LW even though the switch is OK (but I didn't have the loop aerial plugged in and looking at the circuit diag it may prove critical) and the combi on/off/vol switch would not turn off along with being crackly in operation (2.2M type).
A couple of issues but the end is getting near.
