I bought my first decent guitar when I was 30 and my Les Paul (I have another one too) when I was in my early 40s. Its not a cheap hobby and I was really lucky in what I paid for them.
I do have a recommendation though if you are interested - late 80's American Std Strats (must be a made in USA E series) are still easy to pick up and in real terms dont cost that much money. The one I have is a superb instrument and given another 10 years will appreciate in price greatly. I bought mine when it was less than 6 months old.
