Hello Paula, Thorn were OK, we used to have all the usual manufactures diagrams stuck individually on large cardboard sheets, usually cut out from the side of a ctv box. I too worked on lots of 1500's. 3500's etc.
Sony made a lot of good stuff but as you say the Japanese diagrams weren't the best. Their insruction books were even worse.
I worked for Sony abroad and we used to receive new stock to test etc before it was distributed throught the country, there "literal" translation into English/French was sometimes appaling.
I still like the Murphy ones though, used to repair a lot of the old Murphy tv's armed with the diagram and an instabillity probe!....001uf ceramic stuck on the end of a toothbrush handle, Murphys always seemed to be a high gain set. and would go off on one without much persuasion.
