When I was younger, mid-70s, we would sit on the banks of the East Coast line during the school holidays and watch all the LNER stuff coming through. My favourite were the 55s (aka the Deltics), fantastic noise when they came by. We used to get a good bunch of stuff from '08s' to '37s' to '47s' plus the never-ending processsion of DMU's plying their trade between towns.
I had the best of both worlds actually in those summers on top of the cutting, down below there were engines running at high speed and 200 feet above our heads USAF Phantoms were coming into land. Excellent!
