Thanks for pointing out Tony's 90v/1.4v psu article in Radio Bygones. I've only recently took out a subscription to the pdf downloadable version of the magazine and was unaware of the contents of any of the earlier issues.
I just happen to have one of the mains transformers you describe (bought from Bardwell's some time ago) lying around waiting to be used and so have downloaded myself a pdf copy of the RB-124 issue and intend to build Tony's excellent project with it in due course.
Kind regards
Glad the info was of use Robert - thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I do notice that there is a discrepancy between the HT circuit in Fig 1, which shows a full-wave bridge, and the diagrammatic layout in fig 2, which shows just two discrete diodes for the HT, as with the LT circuit. However, the photo of the actual constructed unit below fig 2, (page 11, 'RB' 124) clearly shows a bridge in situ. I don't know if Tony will spot this thread and the query - I know he's very busy - so I'll e-mail him.
Although Tony especially made the unit for his 'Sky Queen', it is of course applicable to just about any battery portable requiring 90V + 1.4V, so is a very useful project. There is always the problem when making a reproduction battery, of the socket, and Tony appears to have used a 4-pin valve-holder. I hadn't appreciated that these were pin compatible with the 4-pin HT/LT plugs on battery radios. Tony provided the link to his excellent website from where the artwork for the battery can be found and printed off: www.vintageradioworld
