As mentioned in another thread, Dennis dropped this one (not literally) into my hands for appraisal with a lien to provide spares only. I have a rule that states as long as there is no woodworm, the scale is not peeling and the back panel is intact then it is a good candidate for recovery. The case was woodworm clean, dirty with the varnish cracking off. A strip right back to the timber needed on this one.
So, spent today stripping the set down in order to see how bad things are. Tons of greasy dirt, webs and other unidentifiable goo abound. I decided to give it a go, replacing all the waxies, reforming the main electrolytic and then powering up the set on transformer only. Both bulbs blown, no surprise there, but all held together with no issues. Popped the valves back in, powered up and..... nothing. Further investigation found the LS transformer primary open circuit. A bodge for testing comprising a 350/1 transformer and a 150r resistor to load things correctly resulting in sound on SW and MW, but LW was dead (some investigation needed there) and no amount of switch cleaner was going to bring it back. In addition a crackly pot and the power on switch stuck permanently open but a good start to the days procedings.
All I need now is a decent replacement 500/1 transformer and a combi pot/power switch next to further this project.
